The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

 

💙 It was Sophocles that said, “Today that you have lived in vain is the tomorrow that a person who died yesterday truly wanted to live.” While reading the story of two kids struggling with cancer, that quote kept lingering in my mind. Hazel Grace has been through her own near-death experience, so it seems like her fight with cancer made her more mature than regular 17-year-old girls. John Green did a great job in describing the way she thinks and talks with dialogue that not only reflects a unique maturity that only cancer children can learn, but also the ever-common teenage feelings of falling in love for the first time in her life. This story is not only about Hazel, however; it is also about Gus, an osteosarcoma patient who lost his leg, and their families, who must watch their kids' suffering and dying. This story has it all, including coming-of-age story, family drama, a romantic love story, and the tragedy and victory of cancer patients fighting battles with almost insurmountable odds. As a future writer, I admire the work Green has accomplished. His writing is very grounded and realistic; as a result, you can easily empathize and sympathize with the characters. In addition to this, the way that he sequences different events and the way the plot unfolds was very clever. I shed a tear every time I thought of Hazel and Gus when I read the book, watched the movie, even when I read trivia about the book on Wikipedia, not because their story is so sad, but because their lives represent a beatiful struggle, one that's found in the life of any other 'ordinary person'. It's not their fault; the fault is in our stars.
